I got an idea how Twitter can make money. OK, here it is.
All Twitter accounts will be categorized into a bunch of demographics like gender, age, location, tweet frequency etc. Then Twitter will sell the ability to companies and services to mass tweet advertising and what not to demographics in locations that suit whatever information they want to impart. Kind of like adsense. The cost scales according to number of people, number of tweets the advertiser wants to buy etc. Personally information is not disclosed to the adverstiser. They only choose the demographic for which to target their paid tweets.
If you are a user you can opt out of all this tweet-spam by paying for your account. Free accounts will get tweet-ads but only based on the user's frequency of twitter activity so maybe there could be a scale like for every 10 tweets you get 1 ad. 100 tweets, 10 ads. That seems fair, right? Or some users may want to be able to choose what kind of tweet ad they receive. Instead of finding followers they can set various alerts around categories they want to hear about, like a new product release, or an event near their location etc. Kind of like a mailing list although more direct into your twitter feed.
Good idea?
I wonder if Twitter will give me a royalty if they use my idea ;-)
